Activities, Leisure and Family Fun in the Drakensberg

Some guests come for adventure, others for a slower pace, and many enjoy a little of both. Families can play together; friends can try something new and everyone can make the most of the fresh mountain air.

Set in the Central to Northern Drakensberg, Cathedral Peak Hotel offers activities and leisure facilities for all ages, including outdoor games, swimming pools, horse riding, quad biking, fishing, children’s entertainment, indoor sport and wellness treatments.

This variety helps each stay unfold in its own way. A day at Cathedral Peak Hotel can be active, restful, playful, scenic or a little of everything. Guests can move between fresh air, shared activities, quiet corners and family-friendly moments, all within the same welcoming mountain setting.

With so much on offer on site, guests can fill the day with activity or simply enjoy time together at an unhurried pace.

Outdoor Activities at the Resort

The Drakensberg invites guests outdoors, and Cathedral Peak Hotel gives them many ways to answer that invitation.

Across the resort, guests can enjoy volleyball, outdoor chess, mini-golf, bowling competitions, badminton, tennis matches and complimentary rock climbing. For slower hours in the sun, the resort’s two swimming pools offer a place to cool off, relax on loungers and enjoy time together between meals, hikes and other activities.

These outdoor activities add a lively, easy rhythm to the stay. Some bring families together. Some invite friendly competition. Others simply make space for guests to move, laugh and enjoy the fresh mountain air without needing to leave the resort.

Swimming Pools

The resort has two sparkling swimming pools, giving guests a place to cool off, relax outdoors and enjoy the Drakensberg sunshine between meals, hikes and other activities. The pools form part of the resort’s broader leisure offering and are especially welcome during family holidays and relaxed summer stays.

Games, Sport and Leisure

Volleyball, outdoor chess, mini-golf, bowls, badminton and tennis give guests several ways to enjoy time together outdoors on the property. Whether guests are feeling active, a little competitive or simply looking for relaxed fun between mountain adventures, there is plenty to keep everyone entertained.

Mountain Biking, Jogging, Horse Riding and Quad Biking

For guests who want to feel more of the landscape beneath their feet, wheels or saddle, Cathedral Peak Hotel offers mountain bike trails, a 5km jogging route, one- or two-hour horse rides for beginner and intermediate riders, and quad biking routes that travel into the hills past Lake William.

Each activity offers a different way to experience the mountain setting. A horse ride brings a slower, more scenic rhythm. A jogging route or mountain bike trail adds movement and freedom. A quad biking route brings adventure and a wider sense of the hills around the resort.

Shop at Cathedral Peak Hotel

Take a piece of the Drakensberg home with you. The Try Me Store gives guests the opportunity to browse Cathedral Peak Hotel branded merchandise and selected keepsakes during their stay.

Whether you are looking for a reminder of your mountain escape or a small gift inspired by your time at the resort, the gift shop adds another thoughtful touch to The Ultimate Drakensberg Experience.

Sightseeing Flights and Special Moments

Some Drakensberg memories are made from a different point of view.

Helicopter sightseeing flights, including a champagne stopover option, offer a memorable way to see the surrounding Drakensberg landscape. Flights operate weather permitting and can be arranged for special occasions, including proposals and wedding photographs.

This experience may suit guests planning a special occasion, romantic moment or memorable addition to their stay.

Fly Fishing and Bass Fishing

For quieter hours outdoors, Cathedral Peak Hotel has three on-site dams for fishing. Lake Jarred, approximately a 15-minute walk from the hotel, is stocked with rainbow trout, while Lake Byron and Lake William offer bass fishing.

It is a wonderfully relaxed way to spend time beside the water and enjoy the stillness of the mountains. Fishing equipment is available for hire from Reception.

Activities for Younger Guests

For many families, the memories made at Cathedral Peak Hotel begin with children discovering the freedom of the resort: running between activities, playing outdoors, spotting something new and feeling part of the mountain holiday.

For younger children, the resort offers a playground, trampolines, a splash pool and daily complimentary pony rides. These activities allow children to play, spend time outside and enjoy the resort setting in ways that feel simple, joyful and close at hand.

For parents, having children’s activities available on site helps make a family stay easier and more relaxed. Days can unfold within the resort, with plenty for younger guests to enjoy without needing constant off-site planning.

Children’s Entertainment Programme

During weekends, long weekends and holidays in the South African four-term school calendar, the hotel offers a children’s entertainment programme. Activities may include short walks, bug hunts, tractor rides, pony rides, craft sessions, movie nights with popcorn, soccer matches and games.

The children’s programme adds structure, fun and a sense of adventure to family stays, giving younger guests organised ways to enjoy the resort and make their own Drakensberg memories.

Indoor Entertainment for Rainy Days and Evenings

Even when the weather shifts, the resort experience continues.

Cathedral Peak Hotel offers indoor activities for colder or rainy days, relaxed evenings and guests who prefer indoor recreation. The resort has a fully equipped gym with a steam room, squash, table tennis and a games room.

The games room is used by teenagers in the evenings and offers pool, table tennis, a Bluetooth speaker and Xbox consoles. This gives teenagers and adults a space to relax, play and spend time together indoors after a day in the mountains.

Entertainment Throughout the Year

Cathedral Peak Hotel’s complimentary daily entertainment programme helps guests ease into resort-life.

Throughout the year, the programme includes up to three daily guided hikes, some of which include tea, coffee and rusks in the mountains, as well as quizzes, mini-golf, volleyball, table tennis competitions, rock climbing and other activities.

This programme gives guests a structured way to take part in the resort experience while still leaving space for their own pace. They can join a guided hike, try a game, spend time with others or choose quieter moments in between.

Please note: This daily entertainment programme is separate from the children’s entertainment programme offered during weekends, long weekends and South African 4-term school holidays.

Enjoying Cathedral Peak Hotel is about more than filling time. It is about letting each day in the mountains take shape, whether through outdoor play, quiet rest, shared meals, guided walks or the simple pleasure of being together in a place that feels far from the rush.
