Every great stay begins with a setting that stays with you.
At Cathedral Peak Hotel, that setting is the central Drakensberg: a landscape of mountains, valleys, rivers, ridges, hiking trails and wide-open views, set within the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. It is here, surrounded by one of the country’s most recognisable mountain landscapes, that Cathedral Peak Hotel has welcomed guests since 1939.
For 87 years, this 4-star, family-run resort has grown around a simple and enduring idea: that time in the mountains should feel generous, memorable and deeply connected to its surroundings. What began as one family’s vision for a secluded Drakensberg retreat has become a beloved resort experience shaped by warm hospitality, outdoor adventure, family traditions and moments shared across generations.
Today, guests can stay, dine, explore, unwind, celebrate and gather in one mountain setting, with rooms and suites, dining spaces, activities, facilities, weddings and conferences all forming part of the Cathedral Peak Hotel experience.
Cathedral Peak Hotel is more than a place to stay in the mountains. It is a place to settle into the rhythm of the Drakensberg, where mornings begin with fresh mountain air, days unfold along walking trails or around shared meals, and evenings ease into the quiet comfort of the resort.
Here, 4-star accommodation, dining, activities, leisure and event spaces come together within one family-run resort, giving guests the freedom to shape a stay around family time, romance, adventure, celebration or simply being surrounded by the mountains.
This is The Ultimate Drakensberg Experience: warm hospitality, memorable moments and the beauty of the landscape woven into every stay.
Long before Cathedral Peak Hotel became a place of arrival, the mountains had already begun telling their own story. Over millions of years the elements shaped the great escarpment, carving the valleys, rivers, grasslands and peaks that give the Drakensberg its unforgettable presence.
Cathedral Peak Hotel lies within the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park, the South African component of the UNESCO-listed Maloti-Drakensberg Park World Heritage Site.
From the resort, guests look onto dramatic peaks, river valleys, grasslands and indigenous vegetation, with walking and hiking routes leading directly into the surrounding landscape.
This is not a landscape viewed only from a distance. Guests can walk, hike, watch birds and wildlife, take photographs and return to the resort afterwards, making the mountains a natural part of each day.
For first-time visitors, the location offers a clear and memorable introduction to the Drakensberg. For returning guests, it offers the warmth of recognition: familiar views, favourite paths, shared traditions and the feeling of coming back to a mountain place with a long story behind it.
This setting has shaped Cathedral Peak Hotel since 1939, giving generations of guests a direct connection to the Drakensberg from one family-run resort.
With accommodation, meals, leisure facilities, outdoor activities and direct access to walking and hiking trails all in one place, the Drakensberg is part of every moment of your stay.
It is an inviting base for family holidays, scenic breaks, hiking adventures, weddings, conferences and quiet time away.
Cathedral Peak Hotel’s story began with Albert van der Riet and his vision for a secluded retreat closer to the Drakensberg than any other.
After visiting the area in the early 1900s, Albert was captivated by the mountains, wildlife and stillness of the valley. He imagined a place where guests could experience that beauty for themselves.
Within this vast and beautiful landscape, a more personal story began with Albert van der Riet. After visiting the area in the early 1900s, Albert was captivated by the mountains, the wildlife, the plant life and the stillness of the valley. He imagined a secluded retreat where guests could come close to the beauty of the Drakensberg and experience its quiet, restorative character for themselves.
After acquiring the land in the mid-1930s, Albert began turning that vision into reality. He built the road, prepared the infrastructure and used stone and rock from the surrounding area to help create the hotel. In 1939, Cathedral Peak Hotel opened as a partially completed 43-room property, welcoming its first guests into a mountain retreat already rooted in hospitality, scenery and outdoor adventure.
Those early stays carried the spirit that still shapes the resort today. Guests enjoyed guided walks, horse rides, dancing and entertainment, beginning a long tradition of shared moments in the mountains. After World War II, the hotel continued to grow as Albert, his wife Doreen and their family expanded the property, added recreational facilities and strengthened Cathedral Peak Hotel’s place in the Drakensberg.
Over the decades, the hotel became a loved destination for guests from South Africa and abroad. Its story continued after Albert’s passing in 1987, when his son William took over the hotel. Together with his wife, Belinda, he carried the family vision forward, preserving the warmth, generosity and sense of place that guests had come to know.
William and Belinda have three children: Byron, Jarred and Ashlea. Byron and his wife, Samantha, have since joined the family business and are set to become the third generation of the van der Riet family to lead the hotel. Their children, Lillian and Alexander, represent the beginning of the family’s fourth generation.
The resort has grown considerably since opening in 1939, but its heart remains unchanged: magnificent mountain surroundings, genuine hospitality and memories shared across generations.
Cathedral Peak Hotel is situated within the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park, a landscape recognised far beyond South Africa for its natural and cultural importance. The park was proclaimed a UNESCO World Heritage Site on 29 November 2000, placing the surrounding mountains, valleys and cultural heritage within an internationally valued protected area.
This recognition speaks to more than scenic beauty. The Drakensberg is valued for its biodiversity, plant and birdlife, dramatic mountain formations, river valleys, grasslands and San rock art. It is a landscape where natural history and human history meet, with the mountains carrying traces of ancient people, living ecosystems and geological forces that shaped the region over time.
For Cathedral Peak Hotel, this setting is central to its identity. Guests are not only staying near beautiful mountains. They are staying within a World Heritage landscape recognised for environmental, geological and cultural value, where every walk, view and outdoor moment forms part of a much larger Drakensberg story.
A place with a story this deep cannot be separated from its surroundings. Cathedral Peak Hotel’s long-standing presence in the Drakensberg connects the resort closely to the natural environment around it and to the communities that help shape life in the area.
