Walks and Hikes from the Resort

Long before Cathedral Peak Hotel welcomed its first guests, the mountains had already shaped the story of this place. Valleys, rivers, grasslands, forests, waterfalls and sandstone formations were carved into the Drakensberg landscape over time, creating the remarkable setting guests still come to experience today.

At Cathedral Peak Hotel, that landscape begins close to the resort. Guests do not need to travel far to feel part of the mountains. The family-run resort offers direct access to 18 walks and hikes that leave from and return to the hotel, with routes ranging from gentle family walks and waterfall paths to forest trails, scenic viewpoints, rock formations and more challenging mountain climbs.

This is one of the clearest ways Cathedral Peak Hotel brings The Ultimate Drakensberg Experience to life. Guests can step out from the comfort of the resort, spend time in a World Heritage mountain setting, and return to warm hospitality, generous meals and the familiar rhythm of the hotel afterwards.

Daily complimentary guided hikes are also offered, including selected walks with tea, coffee and rusks in the mountains, bird watching and visits to San rock art sites. These experiences help guests see the Drakensberg not only as scenery, but as a living landscape of natural beauty, cultural memory and family-run hospitality.

Guided Hikes, Bird Watching and San Rock Art Sites

A guided walk is a rewarding way to discover more of the landscape.

Daily complimentary guided hikes provide support and local insight. Selected walks include tea, coffee and rusks in the mountains, while other outings focus on birdwatching or San rock art sites.

The guided hikes are especially valuable for guests who are unfamiliar with the area or who prefer to explore with support. They also add depth to the experience, connecting each route to the wider World Heritage setting of the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park, where natural history, cultural heritage and mountain scenery meet.

Hiking for Different Fitness Levels

The hiking offering includes gentle walks, easy family routes, moderate hikes, strenuous routes and a guided summit hike for fit and confident hikers. Guests can choose the kind of mountain experience that suits their stay, from a short walk in the fresh air to a more demanding route that ends with the satisfaction of returning to the hotel after a day well spent.
